Chapter 25

“I really appreciate you doing this,” Jason said for the fourth time and pulled into the parking lot for the forensic impound lot.

“It’s no problem,” Charlie said, trying to reassure him again.

“It’s just, you know, in the past few weeks since Lisa took over the garden center, she’s become close to this lady. I think the loss hit her harder than she expected.”

“You don’t have to explain.”

“And she’s been really emotional lately, so I want to do whatever I can to make her feel better.”

“You’re a good fiancé.” Charlie sighed and patted his shoulder and stared out the window at the ten-foot chain-link fence surrounding the place.

Jason parked close to the entrance. The two of them stepped out of the car and headed to the guard shack. When Jason flashed his badge, the officer signed them in, provided them with visitor passes and the location of Maria’s Nissan Altima.

“Thanks,” Jason said and handed Charlie her pass.

Charlie glanced around at all the cars waiting to be processed by a forensic team. “Is her car here because it’s a criminal investigation? Or do they do this for all traffic accidents?”

“This place is mainly for criminal investigations. Since there’re no witnesses or security footage, I’m hoping you’ll see something the forensic team won’t.”

“Sure, but that won’t be admissible, right?” Charlie asked.

“Probably not, but I might be able to nudge the deputy in the right direction, and maybe it’ll give Lisa some comfort knowing we’re doing something.”

A chill crept around Charlie’s shoulders, and she shivered despite the late afternoon heat. She glanced across the lot and saw a woman with shoulder-length brown hair walking the perimeter of the fence as if she couldn’t figure out how to get out. Her translucent body revealed she was a spirit. Charlie’s gaze flitted to the guard shack, where the officer appeared to be playing on his phone. A flurry of technicians worked a car in the garage structure at the opposite end of the lot, dusting for prints, vacuuming carpeting for fibers. Charlie suppressed the urge to call to the spirit out loud. Instead, she closed her eyes and inquired with her mind.

Maria? Maria Torres?

The spirit glanced around as if confused. Then she fixed her stare on Charlie. That’s when Charlie saw the gaping wound in her face. Charlie recoiled a little at the sight.

“What is it?” Jason asked.

“She’s here,” Charlie whispered. “And she looks pissed.”

Jason glanced around as if he hoped he might see her. He had come so far in the three short years they’d known each other. “What do you want to do?”

“Let me talk to her alone. So she doesn’t get spooked.”

He nodded and dug some gloves out of his pocket, and handed a pair to her. “Put these on.”

“Thanks.”

“I’ll go distract the guard so he doesn’t notice what you’re doing.” He gave the fence one more look, then walked away, raising his hand in the air. “Hey…”

Charlie turned and approached the spirit with caution. The gravel crunched beneath her feet, and the hair on her arms stood up.
